Your Children are Not your Children !

One of my friend asked me, "How to rear up my child"?

I did not say any thing to him. Because, i myself do not know how to bring up the children in a proper way. But, I am certain in one thing that How not to rear them up and how not to impose my ideas and plans in to their head, for myself not certain about many things and particularly of the volatile future and its ever changing dimensions.

Here, just I want to offer my friends, the thoughts of "Kahlil Gibran" the most eminent poet and the versatile thinker of our age. (And how should one pronounce..Jibraan or Kibraan? People pronounce in both ways. Which one is correct?)

On Children

Kahlil Gibran
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let our bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Let us Save Trees - and Save Our Humanity!

BECAUSE......

Trees clean the air.
Tree foliage works as a natural air filter of particulate matter such as dust, micro sized metals and pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, ammonia and sulfur dioxides. Trees take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. Combined with the cooling effect of trees, these processes can have a significant impact on reducing smog and overall air pollution.

Trees improve water quality. A healthy urban forest can have a strong influence on our region’s water quality. Tree canopies and root systems slow and reduce storm water runoff, flooding and erosion. Trees also help filter water runoff reducing potential sources of water pollution into our rivers and storm drains.

Trees save energy. Trees cool the air naturally in two ways: through water evaporating from the leaves and direct shade. Homes shaded by trees need less energy for cooling which means lower monthly utility bills in summer and a reduced need for utilities to increase power generation to meet peak load demand.

Trees raise real estate value. Shaded neighborhoods and well-landscaped yards have a positive economic influence on real estate values, timeliness of house sales and neighborhood desirability. Studies report that landscaping speeds the sale of a home by four to six weeks.

Trees help stop inner city violence. A scientific study by the Human-Environment Research Lab has demonstrated that contact with nature may actually help reduce the incidence of aggression and violence in inner-city neighborhoods. According to this study, levels of aggression were significantly lower among people who had some kind of nature outside of their apartments versus those who didn't. The impact of the physical environment on human aggression has been well-established - crowding, high temperatures, and noise have all been linked to violent behavior. Some scientists believe that it's because people living under these conditions suffer from something called chronic mental fatigue, which can make them inattentive, irritable, and impulsive - all of which can be linked to aggressive behavior. Exposure to green spaces, it has been shown, can mitigate the harmful effects of chronic mental fatigue, reducing aggressive behavior in the process.

Some Facts and Figures about Trees:

acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen. This ienough to meet the annual needs of 18 people. -U.S. Department of Agriculture
There are about 60-to 200- million spaces along our city streets where trees could be planted. This translates to the potential to absorb 33 million more tons of CO2 every year, and saving $4 billion in energy costs. -National Wildlife Federation
properly placed around buildings can reduce air conditioning needs by 30 percent and can save 20 - 50 percent in energy used for heating. -USDA Forest Service
Trees can be a stimulus to economic development, attracting new business and tourism. Commercial retail areas are more attractive to shoppers, apartments rent more quickly, tenants stay longer, and space in a wooded setting is more valuable to sell or rent. -The National Arbor Day Foundation
planting of trees means improved water quality, resulting in less runoff and erosion. This allows more recharging of the ground water supply. Wooded areas help prevent the transport of sediment and chemicals into streams. -USDA Forest Service
In laboratory research, visual exposure to settings with trees has produced significant recovery from stress within five minutes, as indicated by changes in blood pressure and muscle tension. -Dr. Roger S. Ulrich Texas A&M University

A tree can grow to manufacture five pounds of pure oxygen per day, consume carbon dioxide to fight the "greenhouse effect" that threatens our survival, and provide the cooling equivalent of ten room-size air conditioning units.

யோஜென் பெற்றோர்களுக்கு ஒரு வேண்டுகோள்! A Request to YoZenian Parents!

Are my perceptions 100% correct?

My mind says " I am always correct in all of my views"...

It says further, my-religion, my-language, my-territory, my-culture
etc. etc..are superior than others!! Yes my mind says so, and subtly
believes so...and there comes are conflicts and wars.

My mind judges everything which belongs not to me, condemns...blames
the other sides!!

My question is... How to judge my own mind which judges "any thing other than itself but under the sky" and its trust worthiness of Judging?

-Mohan Balki

Find out a good Hypnotherapist. Go Fast!!

Mr. Chezhian (pet name)!

Thank you for allowing me to put that case..which may enlighten some of our frineds here!

Dear friend! From your statements I could figure out her problems to certain level. She might have been an “OCD” patient only, if she cleans up the floor, utensils or her hands & parts as often. This cleaning habit comes mostly for the patients who feel some guilt buried in to their sub-conscious mind. And the event or things caused the so-called guilt may not be worth considering, through the perception of the society.

But for them, in your case the lady who seems to be childish in nature, might be hurting one for her. And the Iron deficiency, your 3rd point, does not ever make the people to behave strangely and suspecting the dear friends as the “under cover police officers” either. Iron deficiency causes only the biological symptoms and never such psychological disorders. And your 8th point clearly says that she had severely suffered and affected by the unfriendly and prejudiced people in the past. The problem with this kind of OCD people is, they would not be amicable with others and they usually lacking the sociability.

They are childish in their mental growth to at least some degree due to the depression formed in the child hood days by the parents, teachers or the society. They might have seen or experienced some indigestible events in their earlier periods, which should have caused unbearable pain and an irreparable loss to their Sub-conscious mind. One thing is for sure, she is badly in need of a good hear-ted being to unburden herself. But at the same time from your 5th point it is subtle, that due to her inferiority complex instead of revealing it openly to you that how much you need to her, she goes in reversible way that she need not meet you and continue to be your friend. Rather she can go and get a nicer person than your self!! Her psychological expectation is that you should tell her that you could never survive without her companionship so that she could have some grip on this life and meaning to live on with you a good friend!.

At the same time her self-esteem shall not be questioned for begging some one’s love towards her!!.
Superiority complex and inferiority complex, both are same only in a single coin but placed back to back in position. One who poses herself superior, feels inwardly that she is inferior to others, but acting in the other way!

Solution is...if you can find out a good psychologist who knows hypnotherapy very well, who only can help her to go in to her sub conscious mind and eliminate some unwanted datas imprinted in the past and in turn can implant some positive suggestions permanently inside her inner mind.

And, NOW look in to your self that is it really necessary to repair and re repair an half the quality machine, for the sake of some real worthiness in it. If at all some reason beyond your intellect and only known for your heart then go ahead and continue your friendship. Because, for certain relationship we can never say any logical justifications but only our Soul may feel it!!

Paradigm for New Year 2009 ?

Question from one of my student:

"What in your opinion would be 'A new empowering Paradigm for New Year 2009'?

My Answer:

Paradigm is your own vision from your own point of view. At any given time a generalized paradigm cannot be set for all. For an inborn child and a grown-up adult the same pattern-paradigm-goal would not be suitable. So the age, intellect and position determine the factors…that too by oneself. So, empowering the Paradigm is...ones deeper thirst… and his need of the hour for the New Year!

And know this truth, empowering… or giving power to your goals/visions/paradigm shall never going to be powerful/meaningful unless a strong purpose arises from you within!

SO, KNOW YOUR PURPOSE OF ARRIVAL to this frequency-world and fix up your stronger goals to empower it then!

YOZEN BALKI:

Our Ever Loving Respectable,
President of India!

I was a Civil Engineer & now in the service of Human Psychology more than 15 years, a full-time counsellor/ meditator/ Yo-Zen Sub-conscious Therapist, cured several kind of Psycho- challenges for thousands of people very successfully!

Where upon I found many astonishing truths from their sub-conscious mind, and I recorded hundreds of audio-tapes too!

THE TRUTH IS,
ONLY "OUR MIND IS THE PROBLEM"!
AND NEVER DO,
THE PROBLEM AS SUCH EXISTS
IN THE HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS!!

There could be challenges, and natural pains & pleasures, but never there was/ is / will be any problem as such occurred!!

ALL TERRORISM ORIGINATES FROM OUR "GOOD MIND" ONLY!

YES, MIND IS THE OTHER NAME
FOR "EGO-ISM"!

ONLY THE EGOFUL GOOD MIND CREATES ALL SUCH DIVISIONS AS COMMUNISM, CAPITALISM, NATIONALISM
AND "TERRORISM" TOO!!

No, uneducated people started dividing any undividable natural elements like earth, water and sky!!

Not only the material possessions!

Even, the conceptual dogmas, they never ever created any such principles, and there upon they never started any big war like FIRST WORLD WAR (or) THE SECOND ONE and as successive number of wars, where several millions of military/ civilians killed cruelly!!

And, the "Low/ Medium/ High Intensity war-fare utensils", never ever created by these mediocre mind either!!

Only intellectual people and their MINDs, created all such divisions, thus:
NATIONS, RELIGIONS, CASTES, LANGUAGES, CULTURES etc., Because, GOOD MIND is a good divider and separator, and it goes on separating one thing in to several sectors!!

For example, a Carpenter's LEARNED MIND, PLANS, SELECTS AND cut the log of a single big tree alive, "destroys" it, cuts in to more pieces for the sake of "creating” some dead furniture!!

Where as a wood-cutter (NOT-SO-LEARNED) simply cuts few already-dead branches for the sake creating fire for his meager meal!!

YES, ONLY THE INTELLECTUAL EDUCATED MINDS GO ON SEPERATING
THE NATIONS,

RELIGIONS

AND ALL OTHER GROUPABLE STRUCTURES IN TO SEVERAL SUB-PARTS,
LIKE SEPERATING THE "ATOMS"!!

Now only the problem arises:

WHEN I AM SO ORTHODOX
IN MY NATIONAL
AND RELIGIOUS BELIEF SYSTEMS,
NATURALLY ONE DAY I AM GOING TO BE INTOLERANT TO OTHER PEOPLE AND OTHER SCHOOL OF THOUGHTS!!

When I believe My woman only is virtuous, I naturally have to dis-believe other women's virtuousness!! Though not, I openly say it to others, I would brag it about, with my family members and be criticizing the other family women in a more subtle ways & means!!

YES! TO SAY OR BRAG THAT
MINE IS SUPERIOR
IS NO OTHER THAN BLAMING OUT, THAT THE OTHER MAN / GROUP IS INFERIOR TO MINE !!

If it is the case with all the Religious, National patriotic and educated people, then how come the subliminal conflicts between the various ethnic groups could be pacified?

UNTIL OUR MIND IS THERE,
DIVISIONS WOULD BE CREATED
BY THE LEARNED PEOPLE!

AND UNTIL THE LEARNED PEOPLE ARE THERE IN EARTH,
THERE DOGMAS, PRINCIPLES, ORTHODOXIES, AND ALL TYPES OF "ISMS" WOULD NEVER ALLOW THE MUNDANE PEOPLE TO UNITE TO GETHER!!

Anti-socials OR the "so-called-evil minds" do combine only for the sake of petty crimes, that can be stopped at any time, by elevating their socio-economic, status!!

But, what about these learned people?

They, only invented all types of Divisions, tangible MATERIAL POSSESSIONS
and
intangibles DOGMAS &CONCEPTUAL"ISMS",
Maps/ Nations, Bombs/ Destructive weapons to safe-guard their illusive territory and invisible terrain!!

HEAD ONLY ALWAYS LEADS THE TAILS!!

TAILS ARE OUR BUDDING CHILDREN AND GROWING YOUTH GENERATION!!

Down through the ages, were it not by ELDERLY INTELLECTUAL PEOPLE all the wars had been begun in the name of Religion, Linguistic and Cultural fanaticism?

For example:

The war between Israel and Palestine is of Religious cause!!

The "Mullai-periyar" dam issues and blocking the rivers in our "ONE-INDIA" are of linguistic bias!!

The demanding voices hearing in our ears for "Separate Thelingana" in Andhra, is nothing but cultural intolerance!!

THE ABOVE ISSUES ALIKE, ARE CREATED AND MOTIVATED ONLY BY THE "SEEMS-TO-BE GOOD" & EDUCATED PEOPLE ONLY!

BUT, THEY ARE NOT AWARE ABOUT THEIR NARROWED THOUGHTS, WHICH ONLY COULD BE THE "ROOT-CAUSE" FOR ALL THE ACTIONS & SUCCESSIVE REACTIONS IN ALL "RIOTIC REVOLUTIONS"!!

Yes, any principle is a bad principle

when you follow it in a more pure and orthodox way!!

After all, when some one does not able to follow your principle,
you are going to

SCOLD HIM,
PUNISH HIM,
and AT LAST YOU WOULD KILL HIM
FOR THE SAKE OF
YOUR GOLDEN PRINCIPLE!
THAT’S IT WITH ALL EDUCATED MINDS!!

Here only, terrorism comes in to picture!

All the terrorists through out the world,
are pious people,
kind in nature,
helping (to their segments) mind,
God fearing etc. etc.
But, where from the "killer-sense" emerges?

ONLY FROM OUR MIND !

The educated mind (educated by some dogmas) is a dangerous mind indeed!

It is forever going to separate,
this and that for eternity!
Even, after these said religions, cultures are gone, it will find out some LAME EXCUSES and new segments and it will start dividing our "little-earth" in to more divisions, by some dogmas and principles!!

SO, MY HUMBLE SUGGESTION IS:

1. A forum should be created, where all Kind-Hearted leaders and GREAT MINDS shall renounce their all Labels & Identities other than the HUMAN BEING!

2. They shall declare themselves they are WORLD"IANS",

AND THEIR ONLY RELIGION
IS WORLD"IOUSNESS",
AND THEIR PHILOSOPHY IS WORLD"ISM"!!

3. Only topographic/ political differences shall be there for administration purposes in the far future!!

4. The Psychological truth is, ALWAYS THE ABANDONED CHILDREN, AND THOSE WHO LONG FOR THE PARENTAL LOVE ONLY, IN THE FUTURE DAYS BECOME THE TERRORISTS, in to the hands of Educated Religious/ Social heads! So, care should be taken to find out and reform those children/ students/ adults in advance!!

5. INTER-RELIGIOUS MARRIAGE SHALL BE BANNED IN THE FAR FUTURE by the intensive propaganda of the Forum!!

We are just like different lovely flowers in the Garden of God,
the Gardener!!
We are all but part of this Great
Ever Expanding Universal System
where billions of stars and galaxies do exist!!
We are negligible "little-beings"
in the whole Universe,
like a single sand particle
in the whole-world-sea-shore!!

IT IS OUR BOUNDEN DUTY
TO PROTECT OUR MOTHER EARTH
FREE FROM ALL TYPE OF NATURAL POLLUTIONS & ARTIFICIAL WAR-FARE SPOLED BY OUR "INTELLECTUAL IGNORANCE"!!

WE ALL SHALL UNITE

IN THE NAME OF

THE NATURE / THE GODLINESS!!

Because, the simple Truth is:

WE ARE ONE!

OUR EARTH IS ONE!

UNITED,

WE CAN DO ALL WONDERS!!

Tips for Creating a Blog for You !

Don't you have a Blog yet....?

The first known ‘blog’ appeared on the web in December 1997. A year later, at the end of 1998, there were only 23 web sites that were of the same kind – constantly updated snippets of information written by one person. It was not until the middle of 1999 that software services were provided to enable non-technical people to write their own web logs (blogs). Since that time, the phenomenon of blogging has risen exponentially. Nowadays, around 400 blogs are added to the World Wide Web every minute.

Blogs are web pages that can be updated quickly and easily by anyone. You don’t need special skills, nor do you need any special software programs. If you can type, you can blog. Typically, a blog consists of several entries, called ‘posts’. Each post can be anything from a few words, to several thousand words. The posts can be about things you have seen, ideas you have had, places you have visited – anything really. Some people use blogs to record a daily journal of their life. Others use them to promote their business. Some people use blogs to exchange ideas or to get people interested in a particular topic. There are blogs on hobbies, sports, management, families, technology – you name it, there will probably be a blog about it.Blogs are here to stayBlogging is not some ‘flash in the pan’, here today, gone tomorrow idea. It is permanent; true the technology may change, but the concept of blogging is likely to endure. That’s because it provides an online alternative to the diary, the notebook or the filing cabinet full of clippings and notes. Blogs can bring all of those things easily into one central location for you. Indeed, the business world is taking to blogging in huge numbers.

Some businesses believe that blogging is now an essential tool in their marketing and image. And don’t just take my word for it. Business Week magazine recently ran a cover story on blogging and said that blogging was a ‘prerequisite’ for business. Many large international businesses are turning their attention to 'blogs'. McDonalds, for instance uses blogs within its advertising campaigns; Disney uses blogging for its Intranet. However, blogging has a 'bad name'. That's because there are many dreadful blogs. Many people just type in their daily routines; who wants to read that they've just let the cat out? Or, who wants to read some rant from a weirdo? Well, you can if you want.

Blogging can have positive aspects. For instance, look at http://www.elliotjones.co.uk. Elliot is my son; he was born on 24th November 1999 and has been blogging since before he could read and write! OK, he's had some help from me. Each month, Elliot's blog gets around 800 visitors. Not that many, but most of them are 'regulars'; nice that they care. But the real reason for the blog is that it helps us keep in touch with family and friends spread throughout the world. For instance, Elliot has aunties and uncles in the USA and in Canada, as well as friends in New Zealand and Australia. They all take a regular peek at the blog so they can keep up to date with what's going on; it's so much easier than letters and cheaper than phone calls. But there's another reason for running this site as a blog – it's easy. If suddenly we decide to add some text, we can do it in a few minutes. However, if it were a traditional web site it would take ages to set up a new page. With blogging, the whole process is automated. Plus, it doesn’t cost any money. With traditional web publishing, you may need to get a web designer to change the pages for you – and that would cost and take time.Blogs show the world who you areIf you look at a blog, you get an instant idea of the person behind the page. You can peek into their personality, from the very words they write.

You get an idea about their preferences thanks to the items they choose to write about. In short, a blog allows you to understand the writer and form a relationship with them, if you become a regular reader. For people who simply write a blog for entertainment or for personal reasons this may not be a problem. But for the rest of us, the fact that other people can view our blogs and find out more about us could be a problem. What if a potential employer checked out your blog as part of a job application? What if a customer of your business looked at your blog and disliked you? What if a colleague found it difficult to work with you after reading your blog? As you can see, a blog reveals more about you than you might want.Conversely, a blog can have other effects. Potential employers may look at your blog and discover you are just the person for the job.

Customers may find out about the real you and be more willing to do business with you. And your work colleagues may discover that you could be more of a friend than they thought. A blog allows you to show the world who you are. Blogs are part of your brandClearly, showing the world who you are can have positive impacts on your business and career. But having a blog means that you have an additional piece of ammunition in letting people who matter know more about you. For instance, you may wear particular colours, have a specific hairstyle and use particular accessories to help identify you. The mobile phone you choose, whether or not you use taxis or a bus are all part of the individual you reveal to the outside world. Everything you do helps establish your identity.Having a blog is part of that identity formation, so you need to ensure your blog is consistent with your brand. This means your blog needs to be written ‘from the heart’. Use your emotions, your instincts and the real you to drive what you write in your blog. Trying to be clever or business-like will mean your blog will be too removed from your own identity and so it will not help support your brand.Take a look at http://www.tompeters.com.

Tom Peters is the world’s leading guru on management. You’ll see that his entire web site is a blog. His brand as a management guru is well established; he has been at the peak of his profession for decades.
Yet nowadays, he is using his blog as a central component in his brand management. Clearly if one of the world’s leading management thinkers is so keen on blogging, it must be important. But because blogs are an essential component of your personal brand it means you should avoid using all the ‘default’ values and designs provided by the blogging services. Otherwise, your blog will look just like another blog and it will not reflect your individualism. For this reason, you should at least adapt the templates provided by the blogging services, or design your own pages or buy in a bespoke layout and style to match your brand.

The Tom Peters web site does not look like a typical blog, but it is a blog nevertheless. How to get a blogBy far the easiest way to get yourself going with a blog is to go to http://www.blogger.com. Just sign up for a new account, which is free, and then you can start your blog in a few simple steps. It is perfectly possible to get your blog up and running within an hour. There are alternative systems to blogging, such as TypePad, WordPress and others. However, Blogger is by far the simplest and is extremely flexible. It is owned by Google and so comes with the backing of a solid, international business that knows a thing or two about the Internet. Whatever you do, though, you need to get blogging fast. Businesses, employers and colleagues are increasingly reading blogs to find out more about the real person. If you don’t have a blog, you could lose out to those people who do, because your brand is not complete without a blog.

Top 10 Positive Psychology Books

The Top 10 Book list was compiled by Positive Psychology expert Ben Dean, PhD and actually includes 11 titles (now that's positive thinking!). Positive psychology is the scientific study of optimal human functioning, in short human happiness. The books below represent in Dean's opinion the best cross-section of books on the subject. (Links to Amazon are provided.)
1. Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning
My father was a prisoner of war in Japan during World War II, so I've always had a special interest in Frankl's moving account of his own experience as a prisoner in Auschwitz. This book describes these experiences and then his approach to therapy (logotherapy) which is based on his assumption that our deepest desire is to find meaning and purpose in life. I now believe that Frankl's striking ability to surmount his concentration camp experience was due, in part, to a an unusually strong genetic predisposition toward hope and optimism.
Marty Seligman, Ph.D. is the founding father of Positive Psychology with an extraordinary bio which you can peruse at www.authentichappiness.org. In this book he integrates theory and research to map out how to lead a life of positive emotion, engagement, and meaning. Use this book in conjunction with the assessments at www.authentichappiness.org. (If you don't already have Marty's Learned Optimism or The Optimistic Child, then I recommend adding these classics to your positive psychology library as well.)
3. C. R. Snyder and Shane Lopez's Handbook of Positive Psychology
Published in 2001, the "Handbook" was the first systematic attempt to bring together the leading scholars in the, then, emerging field of positive psychology. Begins with an historical overview by Seligman. Ends assertively with "The Future of Positive Psychology: A Declaration of Independence." Essential for any positive psychology library.
If I were teaching a positive psychology class, this would be the textbook. The editors ask chapter contributors (including Daniel Kahneman, Walter Mischel, Robert Sternberg, Carol Ryff, and Alice Isen) to comment on the "potentials and pitfalls" of a psychology of human strengths.
5. Christopher Peterson and Martin E.P. Seligman's Character Strengths and Virtues: A Handbook and Classification
The CSV, sometimes dubbed the "UnDSM is *the* must-have book for anyone interested in coaching and positive psychology. Each chapter is devoted to one of 24 Strengths--strengths such as curiosity, wisdom, zest, forgiveness, and gratitude. Once you or your clients take the VIA Strengths Survey at www.authentichappiness.org, look up your signature strengths in the Handbook.
6. Alex Linley and Stephen Joseph's Positive Psychology in Practice
This is another must-have book for coaches. Rich with edited chapters by some of the leading figures in positive psychology who outline the implications of their work for practice. Filled with interesting ideas. In its foreword, Marty Seligman writes: "This volume is the cutting edge of positive psychology and the emblem of its future."
Maslow has been called the grandfather of positive psychology. In this classic work (first published in 1968), Maslow writes about values, growth, well-being, peak experiences, and self-actualization.
From the country's preeminent resilience research team, psychologists Karen Reivich and Andrew Shatte. This book is superb. With an impressive integration of theory and research, it offers seven practical strategies that have been proven to increase people's capacity to overcome adversity, negotiate daily obstacles, and bounce back from life-altering events. Highly recommended.
9. Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton's Now, Discover Your Strengths
This is a must-read if you work with clients in business settings. Marcus Buckingham (author of First, Break All the Rules) and the late Don Clifton, Chair of the Gallup International Research & Education Center), call for a "strengths revolution" in the workplace. Their premise is that employees and managers can be much more effective at work and in life by building on their strengths (rather than working on their weaknesses). Their "StrengthsFinder"survey provides a nice complement to the VIA Strengths Survey.
This is the most provocative book on the list. Evolutionary Psychologist Geoffrey Miller presents a compelling argument that character strengths such as creativity, humor, kindness, and leadership were shaped through sexual selection.
Finally, in the spirit of Positive Psychology, let me add an 11th book to my top ten list--a classic that should be on your bookshelf:
11. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience
As you know, "flow" is the state in which we are so completely absorbed in a task that we barely notice the passage of time. According to Csikszentmihalyi (and the research he presents), the more challenging, flow-inducing activities we can introduce into our lives, the happier we are. Among other excellent books by Csikszentmihalyi is Finding Flow and Creativity. He also wrote a book with Howard Gardner and William Damon called Good Work that explores what it means to do socially responsible, excellent work.
A personal note: At one time, I thought "flow" was an either-or state. You were either in flow or not in flow. In fact, it's more accurate to view it as a continuum. On a ten-point scale, you could be at four, at seven, at nine, and so on.
The first time I heard Marty (Seligman) speak, he shared a mnemonic to help remember how Csikszentmihalyi's name is pronounced. Touch your "cheeks." Then think (drugs) "sent me high". So it's "cheeks-sent-me-high" I still can't spell his name, but I can finally pronounce it.
